SKIN CANCER

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Australia, with an incidence that is the highest in the world. The majority of skin cancers are caused by repeated exposure to UV radiation in sunlight, with Sunburn being the most common risk factor.

Skin cancers are more common in men and people over the age of 70. It is important to regularly check your skin with the help of your GP or a Dermatologist if you notice a change. A biopsy may be performed if your doctor is concerned about skin cancer.

There are three main types of skin cancer:

• Basal Cell Carcinoma. (BCC)

• Squamous Cell Carcinoma. (SCC)

• Melanoma.

There are many subtypes of the above skin cancers and treatment can vary on the particular subtype. Surgery is the most common method of treating skin cancers. There are other treatment modes including Creams, Cyrotherapy (dry ice), Curettage (scraping) and Radiation.

Fortunately, the majority of skin cancers can be cured if they are detected and treated early.
